After another frustrating offseason of not directly addressing a decade-long WR issue, at least the Patriots have finally acquired a seasoned receiver. No one has probably ever envisioned Stefon Diggs in a Patriots jersey for more than a few seconds, so let’s dive into the dynamics of this acquisition.
Diggs is a hogger of the ball: Whether he says he’s willing to be patient with the surrounding offense or not, this is a receiver that you will need to hit a quota for every game. The organization has to make sure Drake Maye’s development does not get affected by having Diggs in the corner of his eye all the time.
Diggs is a big personality: Now, this should be pointed out for a reason—good and bad—as Diggs could definitely help energize the current receiver core or also bring people down if the season doesn’t go correctly. With Vrabel assumingly being the lead personality for the pulse of the team, there won’t be too much leeway for Diggs to express himself on the sideline.
Diggs isn’t a fix for the position: The wider scope dynamic at play here is if the organization really thinks Stefon Diggs, at age 31 off an ACL injury, is the receiver to put the lack of explosiveness at bay. Diggs would’ve been somewhat of a #2 or a solid #3 with any other team, and this team will inevitably set him up to be, unfittingly, the main guy.
This offseason, with hindsight and recent news, was a tough reality of free-agent receivers not wanting to come to New England, and it’s disappointing the team has to settle with a receiver who’s past his prime explosiveness. It’s nice to have a recognizable receiver for a change, but the jury is still out on a guy like this.
