The Patriots haven’t had a relevant ace WR dating back to even the last years of Brady. This issue clearly won’t be solved without reaching and overpaying for a main guy, and even then the fit isn’t enticing enough for certain free agents.
This problem clearly shows that New England probably should have reached harder for a receiver like DK Metcalf, who seemingly preferred a warmer climate, then proceeded to sign with Pittsburgh. If you have to give up bigger money AND draft capital in a trade to finally acquire a modern NFL ace receiver, at this point the Patriots should not even hesitate.
Now, after somewhat trying for Metcalf and Godwin, the organization is forced into finally striking on one through the draft, and that’s obviously way less predictable than acquiring one outright. The frustration of having backup receivers in bigger roles will remain until further notice…
