After an offseason of moves and a questionable training camp, the 2024–2025 season for the Bruins won’t transition into an established playoff run. There are a few reasons why, following miscalculated roster construction by Sweeney, this team didn’t have what it took this season…
The previous coach was on his way out:
From former coach Jim Montgomery’s demeanor and constant lineup shuffling at the start of the season, it was clear he wasn’t handling the absence of a contract extension well. To be on your way out so quickly after parting ways with the team suggests he had a fallback plan looming in his mind.
The defense unit being relied on is reckless:
With an offseason focused on defensive players, the expectation was that this team would be responsible in its own zone. The truth is, Zadorov’s presence this season has added structural negligence to a defensive unit already plagued by hesitancy and inconsistent effort.
The foundational offensive forwards are taxed:
After grueling playoff runs demanding a physical style, players like Marchand, Pastrnak, and even Zacha simply can’t keep pace with a league now emphasizing a physical forecheck in the regular season. This has led to poor offensive outputs in critical games and lingering injuries.
As much as I hate to say it: this organization realistically needs a roster reset. You can achieve success with your foundation if you supplement with the right free agents—but otherwise, you need to start acquiring modern talent through the draft.
