Team USA vs. Canada did not disappoint on Saturday night, and McAvoy was right in the middle of the action. The defensive effort by Team USA was the main factor in making a statement in the tournament.
Charlie McAvoy has always been a presence for the Bruins, and this year is no different. However, he’s been showing more of what Bruins fans have been longing for during Four Nations play. He’s had glimpses of poor puck management and classic Bruin-style red-line dump-ins, but in the tournament games, he’s also displayed a more physical edge and a stubbornness in challenging entering forwards.
Having more capable defensemen to play alongside could help bring out this side of his NHL game, but fans can’t deny that he should be doing this consistently for the Bruins. As NHL play resumes after the tournament, we should expect him to raise his level to fit the defensive physicality that… the Bruins were supposed to be built on.
