After a satisfying road win vs. one of the best in the East, things all look up again for the Celtics. Knowing this season has had its fair share of ups and downs, though, let’s set the table for the situations we COULD be looking back on if this season’s playoff expectations fall short.
Standing pat at the trade deadline: This team still has the star talent and depth we praised before the season, but teams evolve and you don’t know how much until the season hits. A complementary piece to create a slightly different look might be the thing to keep teams from figuring you out.
Not moving on from Porzingis: Porzingis has played very well at times this season and contributed while he could in the Finals last year, but his ability to be injured is what it is at this point. His availability for the playoffs would probably be agreed on by this whole fanbase as a 50/50, so you wonder if moving him for a fresher big would pay dividends.
Not building defensive game: This team has clearly conserved energy at times overall in their game this year, and that can pay off as we move into the playoffs. However, defense is something that needs to be worked on with full effort in order to progress, and the playoff teams won’t be any easier to defend this time around.
I’m not clamoring from any rooftop to definitely move on from any player, but all of our perspectives will clearly be changed after whatever result comes of this team April and onward. These different team dynamics are always something to monitor, and it’s good to be aware of them before the tighter games ensue.
