The fact that Vrabel was the coach to write the final chapter for the Patriots’ dynasty is reason enough to believe his fate with the Patriots could be successful. Regardless, let’s get into the key dynamics that will determine the new head coach’s success…
Will Vrabel’s particulars for his management staff get in the way? Vrabel is a coach who wants his type of staff, so it will be crucial that Kraft is able to work with his wish list. As we approach the NFL Draft, it will be interesting to see how the GM role and so on get addressed, considering the much-criticized player scouting and development of the past regime.
Will the players respond well to Vrabel? Although there were definitive things that former HC Jerod Mayo did wrong, the players did still want a change from Belichick’s strict style. Vrabel brings a similarly strict style himself, so players like DE Keion White might be responsive to it, but will other players not react as positively?
Will he handle QB Drake Maye right? He won’t be the offensive coordinator, but Vrabel is obviously responsible for overseeing the development of the QB. That first step of observation will be figuring out what QB coach/coordinator setup would be best for Maye, and if valuable familiarity with AVP would be better than going back to a coordinator like Josh McDaniels.
Keep these questions in mind as we start this new era. Vrabel is a passionate guy who embodies the area, but let’s see if the logistics of his coaching mind can hold up to complete the fit.
