In the Midst of Soto’s Free Agency, Here’s What the Red Sox Should Not Do…

A lot is going to transpire with the future of Juan Soto, as it won’t only impact the team he signs with, but also other teams’ interest in free agents. Let’s take a look at team moves/inactions and free agent signings that the Red Sox should not make:

Do not make Wilyer Abreu a priority to keep: Wilyer Abreu had a nice season last year and won a Gold Glove, but the ceiling for this type of player is not high enough compared to the player you can get with him in a package deal. With young outfielders blossoming as well, now is your shot to make another big move.

Do not trade Roman Anthony: It feels like OF Roman Anthony is becoming what Mayer’s hype used to be—and outfielders are typically the players teams build around. This youthful talent has all the signs pointing up, while also having AAA experience to boot.

Do not leave 1B without depth: If you are going to trade Triston Casas in any deal, knowing you’ll retain other aspiring talent, do not let 1B become another carousel job. Devers, from all reports, seems focused on staying at 3B for the future—so make a 1B move if you’re shipping one out.

Now, we mull this over until Soto sets off the spark…
