In the games that Maye had a chance to directly impact even more, he’s ruining his chances by trying to play hero ball. This main struggle of his—negative plays—is typical for a rookie QB and for someone with his style, but we want to make sure this stays a freshman issue and not a sophomore issue.
Are there going to be chances to sling it down the field, on the run, and take matters into your own hands? 100%. But when the situation is a nail-biter in the late 4th quarter or overtime, Maye should be thinking about a more methodical drive to moderate his eagerness to playmake. Simply, roll the dice with more odds in your favor with your skill set early on—but when it comes to crunch time, send a thousand paper cuts.
This is obviously a general rule to coach to a QB, because I concede there will be seemingly obvious chances late to make a bigger play. As a rule of thumb, though, this should be a philosophy the coaching staff is preaching.
Falling into this habit going forward could lead to turnovers in other situations he works in…
