Everyone thinks about Nick Pivetta and flashes back especially to his playoff moments with us. However, highlights are just highlights—and they definitely don’t tell the full story of this pitcher.

Nick Pivetta is as close to a fastball-curveball–only pitcher as you’re going to see, and unless he somehow retains the effectiveness of his breaking pitches long term, he will be prone to an inevitable downward trajectory. Pivetta wasn’t very coveted by the league when he signed here—just like most of our signings over the past few years—but we used his encouraging analytics while we still could.

Now is the time to invest in actually talented starting pitching—with real ability, and lots of it. The handling of this player will indicate what this rotation will prioritize moving forward…
