When the penalty kill starts going to hell, that’s when you know things are horrendous. The Boston Bruins are not just poor in what they need to improve on—they lack the foundation they’re supposed to be built on.
The ineptitude of the penalty kill bleeds into the inability to defend as a team, so you can see why this is happening, considering the defensemen’s inability to make their presence known. Notice your defensemen playing poorly physically at 5-on-5, mix in a group of forwards with low confidence trying to defend as well, and you get whatever this season has been so far.
What we don’t want to hear is “it’s early.” That—or any other reason—doesn’t excuse the organization at all, but it should cool off our temper until the next game. Coaching moves might need to be made, and a look inward is needed from the players to rediscover their identity—but a quick turnaround is still possible.
The Oilers did it with a single coaching change just last year…
