Trade Talk Tuesday: Rafael Devers

Rafael Devers MLB Stats

Let me start this occasional series of articles with this: I am not saying these players—beloved by our city—are poor talent when I picture these hypotheticals. As always, as Boston fans, we theorize about how to make our teams better, so I will do just that.

Red Sox get: SP Zac Gallen, SP Jordan Montgomery, SS Geraldo Perdomo

FOR

Diamondbacks get: 3B Rafael Devers

Rafael Devers is a supreme talent and one of the best third basemen in MLB with contract control. However, I worry about the trend of his free-swinging mindset paired with the burden of his defensive liabilities.

With the addition of Zac Gallen, you’re getting a premium pitcher with control through 2025. With the addition of Jordan Montgomery, you’re getting a pitcher with ties to the city of Boston who can regain the form he showed during the 2023 World Series run. With the addition of Geraldo Perdomo, you’re getting a young infielder who can bat from both sides and slot in at second base, allowing Story to play shortstop and Grissom to move to third.

You acquire a convincing pitching infusion while dealing away, in my opinion, a potentially volatile player moving forward. You get better defensively with the reshaped infield and take on a young shortstop who has shown promise. Above all, you send the message you should to the fanbase.

Response

  1. I like this deal. Honestly, if it was Devers for 3 players to be named later, I would like it just as much. Not because I want players of little value but because I have no idea who these guys are.

Either way, Devers doesn’t come up when we need him most – which is pretty funny given that his rookie home run versus Chapman is what essentially began his career.
