The city of Boston, and the town of Foxborough as well, is always in motion when it comes to team situations and shifting storylines. One moment you’re watching the Boston Celtics down 2-1 in a competitive series against the New York Knicks, the next moment the franchise icon has collapsed on the floor.
Aside from a moment like that, icons such as Patrice Bergeron, Rafael Devers, and Brad Marchand are permanently gone and removed from the picture. The exciting part is there is still talented people that can come up and drive the next age of title impact for the region. Let’s dive into the individuals who currently stand as the leading faces of New England sports.
1) Jaylen Brown (SF)
Always speaking highly of the city, Jaylen Brown is poised and ready, sharing in Boston’s energy as his season-long audition as the primary scorer will begin. With a title to his name and his partner-in-crime out for the season, Brown stands as the superior name and face to represent the city in the coming year. Fans can easily see that Brown has long wanted the chance to be the face of a franchise, and now he has the chance to be the face of the city.
Averaging 22.2 points and 4.5 assists per game last season, Brown has a strong chance to exceed those numbers with a healthier knee. For a player who has already climbed the mountain for the city and continues to lead by example, this choice should not be difficult by any means.
2) Mike Vrabel (HC)
If you noticed the phrasing earlier, you already know a non-athlete pick was coming. Already making waves thanks to the culture shift of the new New England Patriots, Head Coach Mike Vrabel will stand as the team’s defining icon, rather than the obvious projection of Drake Maye. The unifying and energizing presence Vrabel brings is impossible to ignore, and it will stay on fans’ minds throughout the season.
Whether the team wins or loses, Vrabel is on track to receive both the praise and the heat. Patriots fans are slow to buy in on players after experiencing a drop-off following the dynasty of old, so Maye will have to continue to earn this position.
3) David Pastrnak (RW)
David Pastrnak will be tasked with carrying significant franchise responsibility, along with the expectation to produce at an elite level. With the Boston Bruins in a retool, the star’s relevance will naturally rise and fall with the team to some degree.
He is also on track to compete for captaincy with another team favorite, Charlie McAvoy, so time will tell how much of this universal role he subconsciously wants to take on. As the scorer he is, fans will commonly look to him as the synonymous figure with the Bruins, so he will remain a favorite Bruins icon to receive criticism and praise.
4) Roman Anthony (OF)
With Rafael Devers traded in the middle of this season, and Alex Bregman both aging and holding an opt-out at the end of the year, outfielder Roman Anthony now stands at the forefront of the Boston Red Sox organization. Frequently praised as a mature, beyond-his-years player, Anthony is poised to develop into a leader who embodies the qualities of a young icon.
The veteran charisma, paired with his disciplined approach at the plate, will also make him a role model for many young Red Sox fans. As the years go by, Anthony is also due to climb up these rankings, assuming all goes well health-wise.
