Garrett Whitlock has faced recent inconsistencies—whether due to performance or injury—but he’ll be facing different circumstances this season. He’ll be reinforcing a bullpen that could use the help.
The Red Sox’ bullpen has long been built up with analytical sweethearts more than raw talent, so it will be nice to have a player who represents the best of both when he’s healthy. Whitlock will not only help the team in gotta-have-it spots, but he’ll also relieve the starting pitchers of any taxing extra innings they would have otherwise had to take on.
As the starting rotation begins to take fuller form—unlike in previous years—it’s good to see the bullpen gifted an established name as well. Whitlock will be the ace of the bullpen for this team moving forward.
