Red Sox brass keep repeating that they are not done acquiring talent for the 2025 team, so the sleeping giant representing the fanbase will continue to dream. Assuming the brass finally wants to invest in good moves, this is what it should look like:
Acquire one of the promising IF options: Sign free agent 3B/2B Alex Bregman to a short-term deal and wait for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to hit free agency, or trade for 3B Nolan Arenado from St. Louis—who projects as a Youkilis-type intensity guy that would match the mindset of the city. You need a RHH, someone to take pressure off Devers both mentally and positionally, and someone who fits your ballpark.
Trade for LHP Jordan Montgomery: If you want to compete like L.A. after all the top horses have been taken, you might as well go get a “corrupted” pitcher who can return to ace-level talent in the right fit. That fit for Montgomery? An area he knows well, his family has ties to, and where he’d be surrounded by better pitchers.
Your star, Devers, would be in a better spot all around—and the main issue of starting pitching would be capped off.
