If New England stays at #1 in the draft order after the last week of games, drafting CB/WR Travis Hunter would objectively be a mismatch for the franchise. The team needs to move on from the complicated pick and be able to address multiple areas.
Hunter comes from a somewhat comfortable environment: Colorado, being led by Deion Sanders and his son Shedeur, obviously created a coach who was sticking his head out for the big stars. With the well-documented adversity of not just the league but the state of the Patriots, who’s to say Hunter won’t be affected by an environment that is more collective and trying to embrace a struggling path to resurgence?
Hunter is a project himself: Although the exceptional athletic talent jumps off the tape, the fact that he’s a mix between two positions creates an experiment already. Rebuilding teams do not and should not have the luxury to fiddle around with utilizing Hunter the right way.
The Patriots are made for a #1 pick trade: You have a team that needs a little bit of everything while also prioritizing one position that they really need. Trading the #1 pick literally lets a team get to those things.
If you draft Hunter, you are submitting yourself to a complicated process behind the player. Don’t overcomplicate things, and open yourself up to a treasure trove of prospects.
