Amidst Reports, Patriots Must Avoid Higgins

Higgins WR vs Man
Higgins YAC

After years of not having a wide receiver that threatens defenders, we’re going to spend the bag on… Tee Higgins? This WR would not be stylistically different from what we have had in recent memory.

For context, WR Demario Douglas ranks #3 and #11 in those categories, from left to right. If you’re going to stretch a defense, you need man-coverage beaters, and if you’re not focused on that, you need to at least generate yards after the catch.

Higgins, stylistically and analytically, would not be all that different from the N’Keal Harrys and Ja’Lynn Polks of the world. He leans more toward Polk’s style, as he has somewhat more of a vertical explosion that grabs the eye, but nothing more than that.

If the Patriots want to threaten a defense with more than their QB, we need to be acquiring laterally agile WRs to achieve better separation and a higher YAC rate. Lateral quickness is coveted by the better teams, so why invest so much in an old-style WR?

KC has made a living off fleet-of-foot WRs that possess, at the least, a threat of lateral quickness…

  1. “Old style WR???” Have you been watching the Patriots lately??? ALL YEAR???”?? Drake Maye fits the BALL in!!!! I swear you think our quartebrack is still Mac Jones… We don’t need crazy serparationg to get the ball downfield. We need a BIG target for Drake BIG ARM Maye to fire it down there. He’ll do it, too. This isnt Mac. We don’t need 15 yards of separation just so he can overthrow it by 17 yards or underthrow it by just as much. Drake BIG ARM Maye.

Tee Higgins is 15 pounds and 3 inches bigger than Maye, there’s no comparison between a guy who has catch less than 100 yards in his life and a guy who caught 50 yards TDs in a Super Bowl.

He’s hardly the next Calvin Johnson, but Maye is better than the next Matthew Stafford; just get him a good 1wr, we don’t need Jerry Rice.

That being said, if the plan would be to allocate that money to the Oline instead and draft a WR, go for it. Just don’t go into FA with a plan of “No matter what, lets NOT get Tee Higgins!!!” Terrible strat. I’d like to hear who you’d like us to get instead. Go ahead, I’m waiting.
