This type of report is enough to give any of us fans a dose of slight free agency rumor PTSD. However, it remains consistent that the Red Sox are willing to spend this year, and we should be eyeing a cheaper left-handed pitcher to pair with a front-of-the-rotation piece.
Corbin Burnes (RHP): The Red Sox have a few talented pitchers to headline a rotation—guys like Houck, Giolito, and Bello—but Burnes would be, refreshingly, an obvious ace at the top. His stuff has always played well against hitters, and his presence would be very beneficial for the aspiring aces-to-be.
Jordan Montgomery (LHP): Signing a pitcher like Burnes would allow you to posture for a great underdog project acquisition like Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery had a stellar year a few years back with the Diamondbacks and faltered the year after with the Texas Rangers. The potential has shown it’s there, and you’d get him in a familiar area with talented pitchers to build him up.
Not that the Red Sox should ever be as cautious with spending as they have been in the past, but this would make you feel better about spending the house on Juan Soto. This combination of acquisitions would best complement both the rotation and the batting order.
Burnes – Houck – Montgomery – Bello – Giolito — how’s that for a rotation?
