Drake Maye played an importantly decisive game yesterday against the Los Angeles Rams, and the crucial interception he threw was not out of panic — but the team can still avoid worse offensive situations and total turnovers. With rookie QBs overall, it seems like simply throwing the ball away isn’t emphasized enough.
There have been throwaways by Maye to avoid bad plays, but there continue to be sporadic sacks or negative plays that he could be avoiding by going to it a little more. Do you want to drill it into his head all the time? No, but the model example of Brady played like a QB fearless to throw yet never hesitant to kill off the play when needed.
Fans outside and inside New England would make fun of Brady’s visually wimpy avoidance of sacks or interceptions, but it’s part of what made his ability to consistently get generally positive plays. It’s good to see Maye coached on this and him using the throwaway, but I’d like to see him go to it a little more — especially considering the offensive line.
