Swayman, Bruins continue silent back-and-forth

It is October 16th, and Swayman has still not been extended long-term with the Bruins. Did we think we would be saying this at this time? Regardless, Swayman might need to pump the brakes on his value.

Although the exact numbers of the negotiation aren’t clarified for us, we can definitely establish a healthy theory as to what negotiation is going on right now. Swayman’s side is definitely trying to cash in on his recent playoff stats.

Coming off a stellar playoff series vs. Toronto and Florida, Jeremy Swayman and his agent are clearly making the case that a $9–10 million AAV contract is fitting. His postseason play was one of the standouts of the team and kept Boston in the second series especially. However, this argument does not paint the whole picture of Swayman’s value.

The truth is that, regardless of Jeremy Swayman’s impact, he has not proven he can play a great playoffs off the legs of a full and healthy regular season. Linus Ullmark, who is now with the Ottawa Senators, had always played more of the games in the regular season previously. So the ping-pong negotiation match is clearly set up: Will Swayman be willing to prove he can play a full season and playoffs well and take around $8 million AAV, or is he confident enough in the playoff-based sample size to potentially move on from us?

The table is set—and has been set—with this theoretical conversation for the whole offseason…
